You're My Remedy - The Marvelettes UK Stateside SS 334 USA Tamla 54097 Motown's first successful female vocal group, the Marvelettes are most notable for recording the company's first #1 Pop hit, "Please Mr. Postman" which the Beatles did an excellent copy of in the UK but stopped the Motown version hitting the UK Pop charts in any significant way. The Marvelettes became enormously popular on the Manchester Soul scene with a large number of their songs being played, and they can’t all be included, in an effort to give a cross sectional representation of all the types, styles and artists that made that original Soul musical appreciation in the city. So in an effort to be ‘representative of the artists and their catalogue, which significant amounts were played in the Soul clubs in Manchester in the 60’s, the inclusion has to be restricted to those that scored the highest with the ‘scene’ in though long gone days, that did however give birth to today’s ‘Northern Soul phenomenon. So ‘You’re My Remedy’ is the first in this catalogue from the fabulous Marvelettes. They never seemed to get the promotion from Motown that they deserved and if it wasn’t for the cash generated by ‘Mr Postman’ Tamla Motown might have crashed financially at that time. Maybe Berry Gordy favoured the Supremes, because he was involved with Diana Ross. ‘Don’t give me no headache powders’ Don't give me no headache powders They don't do no good for me There is nothing I can take When my head starts to ache Cause you're my remedy “Ill Keep On Holding On” and “You’re my Remedy” were constantly requested tracks making the dance floor heave and although slower, just as popular was “Don’t Mess With Bill” at the Twisted Wheel Allnighters.
