Night Train
by James Brown
092
Most Mods had this track due to buying ‘THE SUE STORY!’ LP: which was released in the UK in 1965. ‘Night Train’ rocked along at most sessions at Manchester’s most famous Soul Club: first the Brazennose Street ‘Wheel’ then at the Whitworth Street location in late 66’ First recorded in 1952, and it went high into the pop chart at No1 in the USA. Recorded and written by Jimmy Forest (tenor Sax) and his all star combo on the USA United label. Picked up by James Brown and his band the Famous Flames in the early 1960’s it became a themed dance track at the All-nighters that took place every Saturday in the city of Manchester in 1965, and then rolled on for the rest of the decade with the magnificent J.B. chanting out all those fantastic Stateside towns along the tracks. The J. B. version speeds things up and really rocks along like a train in the night and James’s city and station stops add to the energy. A firm favorite on the entire 1960’s Soul scene in the UK: a Mod favorite released on the UK Sue label it played relentlessly at the Twisted Wheel throughout the decade.
