Manchester Soul Jukebox
Another Saturday Night
by Sam Cooke
005
This record was on the turntable at almost every night at the Manchester Twisted Wheel in 1965 and especially on Saturday Nights. It has been said that Ray Charles started Soul Music probable a rightful claim. Sam Cooke however had a voice that made Soul music a smooth sounding groove and he had a stream of consistent Soul hits whereas Ray was more interested in spreading out to other genres of music. ‘Another Saturday Night’ clicked with the Mods who predominated at the ‘Wheel’ as Soul music was emerging as a separate and distinctive new wave of music and Mods embraced the new especially if it was at odds with the popular. If any body liked something – that was a turn off for the arrogant style of the Mods. Sam had given us many great 45’s like ‘Chain Gang’, ‘Shake’ ‘Change Is Gonna Come’ ‘ Aint That Good News’ ‘Bring It On Home To Me’’Having A Party’ ‘Its Got The Whole World Shakin’’ ‘You Send Me’ and many others. Sam was a friend of Cassius Clay (Muhamed Ali) and was seen at the time in the early 60’s with him in publicity photos in the newspapers. You might imagine them going out on a Saturday night but I doubt that they would have had to put up with a girl who might have a strange resemblance to a cat named Frankenstein!
