Ain't That Peculiar
by Marvin Gaye
016
Tamla USA 54122 Tamla Motown UK TMG 539 Written by Moore – Robinson – Rogers - Tarpin 1965 Rolling rhythm and flowing beat a typical great track from the Tamla Motown stronghold in Detroit. Detroit was in the sixties a North American ‘blue collar industrial city, with its music echoing around a Northern England industrial city. This bouncing track tells of the strange emotional feelings that can happen – a deepening of love for someone who treats you cruel. It’s a wicked example of full throttle Motown and Marvin’s great vocal style and written by the poet of emotion Smokie plus help from his friends. Bubbling bass, handclaps and that smooth voice tells us in a questioning manner – “how can love grow from pain – ain’t that peculiar!” The record was written by Smokie Robinson, and Ronald White, Pete Moore, and Marv Tarplin the other members of the Miracles, and produced by Smokie. The Andantes can be heard providing vocal backing.
