High category soul
deep from the heart sung with a building
passion; ‘…since you put me down. My smile
is my make-up I wear since my break-up with
you’. Its raw emotion and heartbreak the
loss and rejection of the person that was
loved, and is still loved, a recurring theme
in Soul music.
This is what Soul music is essentially
about, a song coming from deep emotions, the
addition of a dancing beat on many soul
tracks was a bonus and became for the later
day ‘Northern Soul’ folks the most important
element. However when soul was born in the
sixties following on from leading exponents Ray Charles
and Sam Cooke the genre was mixed with
upbeat songs as well as slow soulful
numbers. The Tracks Of My Tears is a fine
example of the latter.
